Making Casual Fridays Extinct Since 2012

Thigh-High Hotness

Essentials, FootwearFashion FridayComment

Thigh-high boots look great on EVERYONE, and they are a major wardrobe essential for this fall. Expect to spend a little more on these types of boots so that they are good quality, last through the tougher weather, and are properly fitted through the entire leg. I've heard complaints from both camps that the calf portion of boots are either too tight or too loose, so take the time to try on a lot of pairs before you make a purchase. This should be one of those "investment pieces" that, with good care, will stay in your wardrobe for a long time. The basic black and brown varieties are the ones you will likely get the most use out of, but if you've got some extra money in your boot fund and want to have some fun with it, there are some great options out there that have a little more flare for your #FashionFriday pleasure!

Fashion Friday 7/25/14 – TUMMY TIME

Fashion FridayComment

So it’s a potentially risky move, but exposing some skin this time of year especially is pretty much a necessity.  For this Fashion Friday, I’m choosing the stomach for a change.  The outfit I’m going with is a basic black and white with some colorful accessories, similar to last week, but you can mix up any variety of colors and patterns.  The cropped top plus the maxi skirt combination is my favorite this summer.

It’s going to be a hot one, so take advantage of the opportunity to show off the cute wardrobe and all that time you spent shedding that weight you put on during the polar vortex. Fashion Friday fitness brag

Fashion Friday 7/11/14 – Black and White

Fashion FridayComment

So, I love a well put-together black and white outfit with some small colorful accents to keep it interesting.  I also love geometric shapes and symmetry and all the other things loved by most math nerds and applied to fashion.  This week, I incorporated both concepts, and while the picture below isn’t exactly what I put together, it’s pretty damn close.  I think this version may even be more affordable, so…score!

I also have the unfortunate situation of having a bright blue cast on my right arm to mend a busted thumb, so there will be some slight to moderate clashing of some outfits in the weeks to come. I haven’t figured out Fashion Friday for the injured yet…

Fashion Friday 6/13/14 JUNGLE LOVE

Fashion FridayComment

While Jungle Love may be an awesome song by Morris Day and the Time, it is also the theme for this week’s Fashion Friday, devoted to all things animal.  Whether it’s an animal print or some quirky animal-themed accessories, this Fashion Friday it’s time to bring out your wild side…

I am quite partial to giraffe-print items in general, but those pants are amazing.  They are definitely on my wish list! RAWR! Happy Fashion Friday to you, ya filthy animal.

Fashion Friday 5/30/14 – WEDDING EDITION

Fashion FridayComment

Fashion Friday returns! And just in time for summer wedding season!

Our inaugural wedding season post is going for the classic blue and gold combo.  If you've already been working on your tan for beach season, a paler blue would make you look tanner than you actually are (score), and if you haven’t been bronzing yourself that much yet, this royal blue color won’t wash you out.  I also love mixing yellow, rose and white gold accessories so I've done a bit of that here, too, along with a complimentary color for the earrings.

That gold necklace is definitely on my wish list!  Any good substitutes for the style out there?

Hopefully I will have lots of pictures of friends in their wedding season best to post here after the weekend and we can see “who wore it best”

Happy wedding season, and don’t forget to bust out your Fashion Friday best!

Fashion Friday 5/2/14 – It’s Gonna be MAY

Fashion FridayComment

MAY is finally here!  And to celebrate, this Fashion Friday will be dedicated to pastel prettiness!  It can look a little too “Easter-y” if you overdo it, but there is definitely a fashionable way to wear pastels.  Check out the pieces below, which can be paired with neutral colors to tone down the effect, or black/white for a more polished professional pastel.

Super excited that spring is here and summer will be soon, so break out the happy colors! Fashion Friday

Fashion Friday 3/14/14

Happy Fashion Friday – St. Paddy’s edition!  Of course we needed to include some green in the mix, but we can also dress it up with some sparkle and some patterns.  I went with a basic green dress and hotted it up with some embellishments/accessories.  Some of you may have postponed wearing your lucky green until Monday (the “official” holiday), but send me your best outfits anyway – Fashion Friday can make some exceptions

Fashion Friday 1/24/14

Fashion FridayComment

Today’s Fashion Friday submission is a black and white mashup, because I have a meeting and I feel like it’s still work-appropriate to mix up some patterns as long as the colors are a bit more…. subdued… than my usual tastes.  I love the jeans here (1) because they don’t look like jeans unless you inspect closer and (2) the pattern is sick!

The shoes and blazer are “safe” for work-related appointments, and so is the scarf, but mixing patterns in the same colors is a look that I love and that is super multi-functional.  I put a colored bag with it for those of you who may not be totally down to go all black and white, and you can do pretty much anything when it comes to bags with this outfit so let the creativity run wild there

Happy Fashion Friday to all and start shopping for your warm weather Fashion Friday best now!!

Fashion Friday 1/17/14: Sweater Bling

Fashion FridayComment

It’s no secret that I like sparkly, shiny things. Jewelry, bags, shoes…. anything really.  Today’s Fashion Friday item specifically incorporates my love for bling into my love for comfy sweaters, hence “Sweater Bling.”  Bear with me here.  Gone are the days of your crazy cat lady aunt bedazzling kitten designs onto five dollar gray sweatshirts from the drug store.  Embellishments on clothing, when done correctly, look pretty amazing and save you the trouble of having to coordinate an extra accessory into the mix.  Here are a few fab finds demonstrating the awesomeness of the Sweater Bling:

I’m currently rocking a beige turtleneck with some bling popping similar to the beige sweater above. And hey, if you still have a bedazzler laying around, try your hand at your own Sweater Bling creation.  How very Fashion Friday of you!

First Post for the Gentlemen – International Man of Mystery

Fashion Friday1 Comment

Ahhhhh, the gentlemen. What red-blooded fashionable female doesn’t love a guy dressed up and put together? Don’t let the title fool you – we’re not talking Austin Powers frilly lace cravats or crushed velvet suits.  But I’m still thinking the spy motif is not a bad place to start.  In my internet perusing, my love of the FX show “Archer” brought me to this little gem, and I knew it was destined to be a Fashion Friday inclusion:

Not sure how many Fashion Friday followers also happen to love Archer, but this whole thing is amazing.  I love the collection, I love the tie-in to the show… I love all of it.  I’m clearly in the DANGER ZONE.

New Year, New Category – Shout Outs

Fashion FridayComment

This will be the first in a series of posts dedicated to my fashionable friends and fellow Fashion Friday followers.  Today’s shout out goes out to my old friend Jia from college days and our mutual love of statement pieces.  Her photo (compiled after some enthusiastic internet shopping) is here:

I squealed with delight at all the pretty colors and patterns and sparkliness (is that a word?) going on in her jewelry collection.  I stifled my jealously long enough to ask permission to share her masterpiece with the world and to make her my first ever Fashion Friday shout out! Here’s to Jia, her fabulous taste in accessories, and her faithful upholding of the Fashion Friday mantra! xoxo

Scarf Love

Fashion FridayComment

In my younger days, I hated scarves. They were itchy, made my face and head too hot, and were always getting caught on things or lost somewhere.  Now that I am old, wise, and fashionable, I have come to appreciate the scarf and to know it as more than a woolly winter sweat wrap.  Let’s check out some options for your fashionable Friday outfits…

Most of these scarves are not “winter weather warmth” scarves, but some beautiful silk options instead. Now, these are a bit on the pricier range, but what can I say, Alexander McQueen makes a hell of a scarf, amirite?  I will devote a future post to seeking out some comparable printed scarves that are a bit more friendly on the wallet, and don’t be afraid to comment with some less expensive options as you find them, too!

Fashion Friday 1/3/14 – FIRST FASHION FRIDAY OF 2014!!!

Fashion FridayComment

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Hopefully everyone had a safe and happy celebration to ring in 2014 and say a big “good riddance” to 2013! I’m not the only person I know who is happy to say goodbye to 2013, but the important thing no matter how your last year went is to be your best self this year   And in that spirit, let’s check out my pick for the first Fashion Friday of the new year…

I love chevron striping and I love sparkly things, so I see no reason these two things should not be together.  The leggings are a little “out there” but the sweater and boots and jacket tame everything down a bit so you don’t accidentally look like you’re still wearing your NYE best.

The start of a new year is a great time to hit “reset” on parts of yourself or your life you want to be different.  Changing yourself for the better should be a resolution we all make to ourselves every year.  Each year we should be working to become the best possible versions of ourselves – learning more, working hard, enriching the lives of others, and making the world better than it was before we got here. Feeling good about yourself, in my opinion, is instrumental in our capacity to make others feel better, too. So hit the gym, dress up, and take good care of yourself so you can take care of everybody else, too. Here’s to a happy, healthy, successful 2014 – Happy Fashion Friday!

It’s About Time…

Fashion FridayComment

I love the look of several bracelets on at once – bangles, wrapped, and bonus if you’ve got several different kinds on at once.  I also like knowing what time it is.  Even with our phones and other electronics at the ready, having a nice watch is old school classy. And I love anything old school classy that we can bring into the now.  In that same vein, this post is dedicated to wrap watches.

As I like to do, I’ve included a few different styles and price points for this fashionable little number.  I’ve also seen a few with interchangeable bands, which is a great idea.  If you haven’t finished your Christmas shopping yet, this is also  perfect item to use for my favorite shopping maneuver: The old “one for you, one for me” routine.

Fashion Friday 12/20/13 – The “Not So Ugly” Sweater Edition

Fashion FridayComment

So I’m sure everyone is being inundated with invites for “Ugly Sweater Parties” these days, and, if you’re like me, you’ve recycled the same ugly sweater from a thrift store or some other novelty place for the last few years.  In fact, mine has become such a Christmas staple that I’ve taken to wearing it every Christmas Day.  My relatives regularly ask if The Sweater will be making an appearance (always does).

Anyway, I thought maybe in the spirit of ugly holiday sweaters and their frequent themes of snowflakes, Christmas trees, reindeer, presents, and all that happy stuff, we could find a holiday sweater with some of those elements without it being hideously ugly and getting dragged out once a year to get blind drunk in.  Here’s what I found:

None of these sweaters are ugly in my opinion, but I do recognize that a few may fall on the not-quite-fashionable side of the holiday fashion fence.  But, to quote National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, “I don’t know what to say except, it’s Christmas and we’re all in misery.”  ENJOY the holiday and Happy Fashion Friday!

Fashion Friday 12/13/13 – OPERA EDITION

Fashion FridayComment

So, this Friday I am fortunate enough to go on a lovely opera date with my best pal! First time at the opera!  OK, so technically it was an operetta (Die Fledermaus), but still…

Anyway, it is a lovely chance to take in some culture, listen to some great tunes, and scope/wear some fashion. Being that we’re in the depths of winter and snowstorms, practicality has taken priority over fashion for the most part, but still managed to come up with…

And the best part is GLOVES!!!  Opera (operetta, FINE) was a huge success. We should have a bigger crowd together for the next opera adventure in a month or two, and I’m already thinking about the next outfit.  Might even get myself some new gloves   HAPPY FASHION FRIDAY!

Fashion Friday 12/6/13

Fashion FridayComment

This Fashion Friday, we toss in something unexpected.  Classic winter look – lots of black, nice and warm, cashmere and tweed, and then BAM… yellow skull print scarf.  Rock and roll, but subtle

Sadly, I do not own the Alexander McQueen scarf above, but I will substitute with a similar pop of color, pattern, or (hopefully) both!  I love the classics when it comes to fabrics and prints and pairings, but changing out some accessories or adding something unexpected makes it your own.  Plus the classics will always be classics, so they can stay in your wardrobe forever and you can get freaky deaky with your cash on the fun accessories instead.  Happy Fashion Friday!

Tartan Trending

Fashion FridayComment

Seen on the runways for some of the Fall/Winter 2013-2014 was the awesomeness of the tartan. I am quite partial to tartan (and Scotland) in general, so seeing this fabric being incorporated into this winter’s wardrobe was a sight for sore eyes.  Now, granted, it may not be the most flattering pattern, and too much of this good thing can be dangerous in that you’ll end up looking like a throw blanket in a ski chalet.  So use with caution, but definitely pick up at least one or two accent pieces with this awesome winter trend.

Necklace Trend

Fashion FridayComment

So while shopping in Miami with my pal from Scotland, I picked up (and eventually bought) several things that made her remark “Oh yeah, that’s really big in the UK right now.”  I guess that means I’m fashionable, but not necessarily at the trend-setter level yet  :)  One of the items I bought that I absolutely love is basically an updated disco ball of a necklace.  I tend to like bright sparkly things, so it caught my eye right away.

As you can see by checking the examples above, there are lots of price points for these bad boys.  I went with the one on the far right… for now
